Piper
« on: June 19, 2009, 10:01:25 AM »

I came accross a vidio that shows Piper south africa knife fighting-sense i dont know too much about th tactics out there i watched it a few times-seems to be wicked as the instructor used a couple variations-in both the knife seems to be moving very very quickly and the tactics i have seen to disarm in other places would not work.

In one theThe knife was held with blade back towards arm and he went accross cut the opponents arm -checked-then went back accross to opposite side pushed the arm and his knife came up and stabbed. Hope i discribed that right.

In the other the knife was held blade forward and seemed to be moving in sort of figure 8s and forward and back- lots of slicing-very  fast. dont think the standard block and grab would be quick enough.

In any event if attacked by surprise one would find them selves hurt pretty badly.

Instructor said he took tactics from prison tactics in south aftrica.

Now that i recall I did read the posts in the past about this system-
reolizing that when a vidio is made the persnnel want to show the good side of the system-what is interesting though is the fact that as i previously mentined -if attacked by surprise this seems to be pretty dangerous-
also again-what type unarmed defense do you use when this guy is flaining this blade at you?
Do you attempt to block and strike?
Or run like hell-
looks to me as if it would be a good thing to practise against with a simulated blade?
Remember Murphies law comes into play in any sanario...

Hey WW-looking this over as well.  Don't have much to say, except Hocks quote summed it up, "if you never seen knife fighting before, prepare to be dazzled.  If you have, then stock up on the No Doz."

The knife hand moving, good idea.  The multiple slash/stabs, good idea.  But to call it a prison or street knife fighting style is a stretch for me.  When I see it, I think Mantis Kung Fu.  It I was to put together my combos like that, I'd be missing a lot of grabbing and stabbing time. Even as a sparring system, it seems to be focusing on a lot of hand waving and less focus on closing the gap for a kill, just enough time for the bad guy to switch to his concealed carry auto and blow off the head...

What to do against this guy, throw in a handful of dirt in his face...or, do like we do in the CQCG-evade until you can enter with eye attack on the end of an over-committed slash.  With reverse grip, what works for me is to intercept before it comes at you or when passes by you.  The other thing I might do is a quick long range groin kick and intercept 2 on 1 the knife arm once it is dropping to redirect back to me.

Basically, once you work slow to fast unarmed against this kind of "mantis" knife, you realize how adrenaline will help you intercept the pattern in real-time.

Take care over there WW!
