To hang a Damian Ross Self Defense Company shingle on your door and teach "SDC?"
The dues are $5,000 a year. And, you cannot alter or deviate from the Ross outline.

To be a Paul Vunak instructor is $1,200 a year, or $100 a month.

That's interesting.  Vunak is actually a big name in the martial arts.

I knew about him before I knew about the internet.  I did not know about Ross until reading this forum.

As of this last January its $1,000 a year a few hundred a month (this sucks more money annually) and a MANDATORY webpage which must include Vunak as an important feature of the page.

Of course NONE of the oldtimers are paying these new fees and the new weekend wonders are paying and are featured on the webpage.

Lots of disgruntled people.

I've always been a little surprised that someone would pay good money to train with someone, and then have to pay that someone money to say they trained with them. Or does a person get more out of these small organizations than I think?

I wouldn't do it.

My guess is that the bulk of the people involved are long-time martial artists who decided to make money at it and think certifications and associations are helpful, or people with little or no training who think a weekend certification class will make them an instructor and a business owner.

"Business in a box" kits and weekend certifications are common for many types of activities and fields.  For the most part you are really on your own and the credentials don't help much, and in some cases it would hurt.  I don't know why  students will stay for years  in a school where they know the instructor only took a weekend cerification class to get his qualifications.

See. That's why I like the SFC.  I don't have to pay truibute for already having paid to learn something.  How many of you pay your school teachers for having taught you mathematics or geography?  What a load of crap.  Now if its to particptae in a specialized group...alright I can see that - but there better be benefits other than paying the head dudes house payment, like giving me a discount on a smeinar or training session...
