Purpose Tremor
« on: December 16, 2009, 12:15:33 PM »

Have you ever tried to thread a needle?  If you have, you may have noticed that your hand was perfectly steady until you were very close to the eye of the needle and suddenly your hand starts to shake uncontrollably.  The pressure of getting the thread into the very small opening of the needle causes an “over-carefulness” that is referred to as “purpose tremor” in medical circles.

I find that when the adrenaline rush kicks in that my needle threading skills deteriorate by approximately 50%. If startled I never recover and have to walk around with holes in my pants.

Thanks Joe for the info.

I did a search and came up with this. The way I figure it I'll be called Shakes within the next couple of years.

I found this idea presented in a book called Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz.  Maltz was a plastic surgeon and purpose tremor is common among young inexperienced surgeons.

Psycho-Cybernetics is the original science of self-improvement; one read through this book and it is evident that Maltz’s research spawned an entire generation of self-help gurus from Zig Ziglar to Anthony Robbins and all the way through the majority of modern NLPers.

The book was first published in 1960 and has been updated several times.  Purpose tremor remains constant in all versions.  He also has some interesting essays on the way most people interpret the adrenalin rush and how it is commonly misunderstood.

PS  It is also noted that Maltz's visualisation drills pretty much started sports psychology.  Vince Lombardi used Maltz's principles to lead the Green Bay Packers to many championships.

I reread the article-then looking at some judo clips/boxing clips on you tube -it appears  that some fighters apply this and apply it in the ring- Suagar Ray Robinson/Mohammed Ali
appeared to be relaxed during the fights-
'Iwould imagine that snipers practise the relaxation process also so they dont shake

Joe any suggestions on how to combat the tremor during training students?

1) Repetition
2) Stress Inoculation Drills
3) Proper Breathing

Be sure to run your concepts through this filter:

 - Theoretical
 - Static
 - Dynamic
 - Low-Level CBS
 - High-Level CBS

The fine detail has to be covered in person and is bespoke to each individual.  A good teacher has the ability to look at a whole group and decide who needs what specific prescription.  Over the years I have carefully studied how Hock does this very successfully.

Thinking back on occasion I have the tremor when taking careful aim especially if I've slacked off on shooting for awhile. The more I aim the more I notice the slight tremor. On the flip side if I just aimed and took the shot there wasn't a tremor I can remember.

The tremor is also something that I experienced when first playing live in clubs, but I still managed to hit most of the notes. And it went away pretty quick once I got into the moment. So maybe a lot of the shakes has to do with anticipation rather than fight or flight.

Joe,
What kind of Stress Inoculation Drills are you doing?

"...fight or flight..."

and FREEZE

Everything is up for grabs, all these tired old catch phrases and their old simplistic meanings, with the burst of discoveries and technologies.

What exactly causes what and why?
