Correctional Officer slashed in Folsom
« on: December 29, 2009, 12:57:24 AM »

The officer in question only has a few years in the dept.  I've worked around him a couple of times and he seems like a nice guy and a good cop.  The officer and a nurse were in one of the housing unit sections preparing to pass out medication in the block (this is a new procedure that I am not a fan of).  The officer was carring a water jug into the section.  The inmate was on the phone and came up behind him, grabbed his head and pulled it back exposing his neck.  The inmate had some razor blades imbedded in a toothbrush handle and slashed his neck.  Its my understanding he was also slashed on the face and chest.
Once out of the academy, officers receive training once a year on the baton and unarmed combat.  Our unarmed combat consists of blocking and stepping and pivoting to each side.  That's it!  The baton ciriculum leaves much to be desired as well.

Damm, Thats a tough deal if he was carrying a water jug with both hands and got it from behind. Why the hell was he by himself with both hands occupied? You would think he would be making a inmate carry water instead of himself if the story is correct.

Inmates aren't allowed to accompany the medical staff due to the medication (such as: narcotics, I've never seen so much methadone in my life) possibly being stolen.  Unfortunately, when your in a general population block inmates are allowed some access in certain areas.  The officer and nurse were in a housing unit section.  In the section you have two tiers and approx. 20 cells and up to 40 housed inmates.  The section also includes a "day room" with a tv, tables and a phone.  During the day inmates are allowed access to the phone.  The officer and nurse were probably going to set up on one of the tables.  As you enter the day room the phone is located on the same wall as the section door to one side or the other.  Normally, the inmates are released from their cells and come down to the dayroom to get their medication.  The officer then checks their mouth to make sure they didn't cheek it.
