A guy who worked as a prison officer told me that the term ' shank ' we all know as a makeshift knife, originated from inmates in prison putting their steel toe cap boots in the furnace and making a knife blade from the steel shank that runs along the base of the boot.

Duz that ring a bell with anyone or does the name originate from another source ?

I know it's just a bit of trivia, but I'm in geek mode at the moment !
