Redcap,
Wow! O.K., I see what you're talking about now. But, I was thinking more along the lines of, "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" instead of Gun's and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle!"
BIG difference!
I don't think the issue here is that we're "proud of having to go about armed to the teeth to make it safely home to my secret Armageddon Ready hide out in the hills." I do think that we're proud of the ability to
choose to do so.
As far as the immigrant thing; I really can't comment on that. My experiences have been dealing with the exact same attitudes as Shastana described from non-gun owning home grown Americans.
It's their choice. But one of these days I won't be around to put down that aggressive dog or other animal nuisance. They'll have to call the police and wait for someone to come and help them. That can take a considerable amount of time here in the very rural area where I currently live. Now, where my family lives in Florida, there's a very strong police presence and the animal problem is practically nonexistent.
But, I'll still be prepared to handle those situations for myself, by myself. It's my choice. I love the fact, that for now, I have that freedom to choose.
I love this country, and spent 20 years of my life serving it as well as I could in the Navy. Now that I'm retired, I enjoy taking advantage of the many liberties that I feel many U.S. citizens take for granted.
I've been to many other countries and have met both good folks and bad, and I've had the pleasure of seeing some spectacular things (a sunrise or sunset on the Indian Ocean...just gorgeous!). I could have gone anywhere I wanted, and I stay here in the U.S.A.
I don't think that makes me arrogant or of a narrow world view.
It's not the guns that I have that are really that important to me; it's the
right to have them that's important. I think there's a difference.
I guess I'm a little off topic now; just wanted to add my two cents to this particular part of the thread.
"Thanks" in advance for putting up with my rambling!

P.S.
"I do like some nice blue grass banjo and a good shot of Kentuckey's finest, I must admit"
Now you're talking!
