Welcome to the Jungle...in the jungle...the mighty American Jungle!   Rugged wilderness and vast oceans, what a great place!  I can go the ocean, then the desert, the city, then back to the snow covered mountains in my state.  We can hunt and fish here, there are big cats, bears, gators, snakes, and then the urban "meat eaters" wandering about.  In many areas, It's No place for a "civilized pussy".  As the saying goes, Love it or Leave it.  Most stay, even more want to migrate here.

So why then is Immigration is a problem, so why the hype to move to America then?  Could it be we are gathering up all the welfare seekers?  I met quite a few of those, some neighbors even from Italy and Germany, and they laugh at my 40-50hr job commitment, then blatantly envy my possessions...go figure.

They scoff my rifle collection, but gladly accept my jerked venison gift.  And when I scared the bear that ripped off their kitchen door with my 12 gauge they were grateful as all hell....go figure again!  I guess they want somebody else to do everything for them, like royalty or something.

If I lived in the wilderness and had to deal with carnivorous animals I would pack some heat too, as they say. I note the 'my dick is bigger than your dick' tone and wonder if the firearms are a penis substitute of some kind? Anyway, the good news is you have found somewhere that suits you and your world view etc, and that is wonderful. I confess to wondering about someone that jerks off deers but if everyone where you live is into it, who am I to criticize. (banjo picking heard in the background)

I used to have several rifles and enjoyed blatting away on a mate's property up in the bush but I grew out of it eventually. Much man love to you and your jerked deers,

Redcap,

I really didn't see the whole "dick measuring" thing going on in Shastana's post. Actually, I have had similar experiences to his and feel pretty much the same way. So, maybe my world view is skewed a little and I subconsciously want to jerk-off deer and just don't know it yet. You never know!

Regardless, that's a hilarious reply!

P.S.
It just ain't music unless it has a banjo and a fiddle in it! ;D

It was the Guns 'N Roses 'welcome to the mighty (american) jungle' thing, as well as the put down of the lesser races who just can't cut it in the USA etc that made me think 'dick measuring'.

I accept the tactical reality in the USA is different to the UK and Australia but I'm just not into being proud of having to go about armed to the teeth to make it safely home to my secret Armageddon Ready hide out in the hills, at least not at the expense of nice German and Italian migrants. I would think they would be rare nowadays, all the tired and huddled ones got there pre WW1.

I do like some nice blue grass banjo and a good shot of Kentuckey's finest, I must admit.

Redcap,

Wow! O.K., I see what you're talking about now. But, I was thinking more along the lines of, "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight" instead of Gun's and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle!"

BIG difference!

I don't think the issue here is that we're "proud of having to go about armed to the teeth to make it safely home to my secret Armageddon Ready hide out in the hills." I do think that we're proud of the ability to choose to do so.

As far as the immigrant thing; I really can't comment on that. My experiences have been dealing with the exact same attitudes as Shastana described from non-gun owning home grown Americans.

It's their choice. But one of these days I won't be around to put down that aggressive dog or other animal nuisance. They'll have to call the police and wait for someone to come and help them. That can take a considerable amount of time here in the very rural area where I currently live. Now, where my family lives in Florida, there's a very strong police presence and the animal problem is practically nonexistent.

But, I'll still be prepared to handle those situations for myself, by myself. It's my choice. I love the fact, that for now, I have that freedom to choose.

I love this country, and spent 20 years of my life serving it as well as I could in the Navy. Now that I'm retired, I enjoy taking advantage of the many liberties that I feel many U.S. citizens take for granted.

I've been to many other countries and have met both good folks and bad, and I've had the pleasure of seeing some spectacular things (a sunrise or sunset on the Indian Ocean...just gorgeous!). I could have gone anywhere I wanted, and I stay here in the U.S.A.

I don't think that makes me arrogant or of a narrow world view.
It's not the guns that I have that are really that important to me; it's the right to have them that's important. I think there's a difference.

I guess I'm a little off topic now; just wanted to add my two cents to this particular part of the thread.

"Thanks" in advance for putting up with my rambling! ;D

P.S.

Classic Redcap, but where is your mind...mate?  Jerky, like beef jerky.  And hunting and wildlife observation are a past time in the mountains here.  Instead of going to the supermarket and buying pre-wrapped meat, you get to earn that meal, hours of stalking and tracking, then maybe your lucky?  Either way it keeps my field skills up to par.

As far as your vision of armaggedon, you think life in the mountains is about that bullshit, well then, you need to sit up on the deck here and watch the amazing sunsets over the incredibly brilliant colored sky, the blue blue sky, and trees as far as the eye can see.  I grew up and moved around in the urban areas, and I had the choice to live a more peaceful life and took it.  So, I guess if that is too much for you to imagine, well then you can tell yourself its about armaggedon.  What a dark world it must be down under...

Funny how the tone changes somewhat, Shastarasta. Becomes far more reasoned and rational than the original pry my gun from my cold dead paws if you dare initial outburst.

I agree Dawg, you love where you live and choose to live there and you choose to have a gun. I would have a gun too if I lived where you do and we do have some fun places here in the dark downunder, we have some nice guns, too.

I think the problem is not from those of us who handle firearms appropriately but those who have a susceptibility to going postal. I don;t think you could ever outlaw all firearms and have it mean something and I am against that anyway. But then I have always been brought up to handle firearms safely, even as a boy and that they are a tool, not an evil demon.

Redcap, I understand your viewpoint, but my position never changes on firearms.  I try to keep it on zero when others are two mils to the right or left.  The issue of guns is a national, regional, personal issue.  People just went on a shopping spree this last season and record number of firearms and ammo were bought, partly out of fear of somehow losing the freedom to own.  That tells you the convictions that many Americans have about the issue, and I think the international debate on this is very lopsided.  And on this forum there is an unfortunate number of anti-gun views from outside the US, debating an issue that is not their fight.  Which then we counter with our convictions at the forefront.

So, if we really want to learn about the gun culture, the source of crime, the misuse of firearms, and the freedoms people exercise in the US, then we need to return to the central point of why people are desperate enough to live a life of violent crime, become active shooters, slaughter innocents, and otherwise create mayhem.  It is not the tools they use...it is the reason why they are driven to the dark side.  That is what we should be talking about, really...

I know OZ is not a dark place man.  Just trying to lighten up your grip on my nuts about the whole "run to the hills" thing.  It isn't like that around here, mostly average working families, a few cowboys and indians, some retirees with cash, and couple hippies, but no banjos.  And more lakes, rivers, trees and wildlife than anything.  You get in where you fit in.

And on a side note, I've known a couple mates from OZ, used to get in the ocean with them.  They fit in the lineup in the most rugged coastline area, along with the loggers and other hardcore watermen. They were hardcore too and fun to party with, they could drink like a fish!  So no bad or disrespect to OZ.

Looking at the root cause of why people abuse firearms is similar to what I mentioned on the other thread about the reasons why terrorists become terrorists. Joe Hubbard responded about how already we had spent too much looking at the problem and while I tend to agree, I mentioned that there is a tactical side and a strategic side. Tactically we have to deal with these criminals. Strategically we should be looking to the root causes.

It is both inaccurate and oversimplistic to say "X is the reason". I think it is a range of factors and situations, causes and ultimately personal choices. The recent increase in gun sales might be by right wingers worried that Obama is in power and so their ignorance of his future decisions had them stocking up. Of course if they make it illegal to won the guns they would have to hand them in or be in breach of the law, money wasted. Or the govt could offer to recompense them as ours did after that Port Arthur construct. I call it a construct because I don;t believe for a second it was what we were told it to be, but that's another story.

Like I said, if I lived in the hills where cougars and bears are real I would tool up, too. If I were in an urban jungle I would relocate because I can't bodyguard my kids 24/7.

which is why the whole long gun registration crap in Canada has fallen flat on its ass and cost a fortune.
So let us all get ourselves a whistle and barricade ourself in our shitsuits and jerk off a few deers on some British estate while we run to the hills.
