Instructor Smith,
I Have a Full FIST suit.
I know all suits have limitations and I KNOW that when I put it on,whether it be as an UKE,the assistant to the instrucotr who takes the hits during the instruction
or
Wearing the suit as an Instructor to allow students to step up the level of intensity, even to those who are regular students, they get carried away.

The SUIT gives the impression that attacks can be more violent,a bit harder,a bit more realistic,so it is an agreed to situation,an expected result as this is what we put the suit on for .
We wear the suit to allow the students, the trainees, to hit with more intent.

This is not a surprise to those who have been around the Martial arts and training.

The suit takes/absorbs a large portion of the impact, better than in the days of training without the suits and or without protective gear, which you are aware of since you started training before most of the gear and the suits were available.

Sorry if you did not appreciate my response ,but the fact that you agreed to wear the suit, and the fact that you did not have the Instructor, who asked you to wear the suit, to define, and enforce, the limits of attack, then you are at fault as much as the Instructor.

You could have declined to wear the suit, since you claim you knew that once they said how they would come at you,you knew they would do it and try to hurt you.
If knowing the injury level was raised and you still went ahead ,then again the fault is shared between you and the instructor.

Sorry my answer does not fit with the answer you seem to want.

All the Best.

Something I always tell the folks I train with is that if I'm the uke then they're responsible for me and I'm responsible for me. In other words if they strike to injure then they are responsible, but it's also my responsibility to defend myself and try not to get hurt. Even during training you have to be nuts to let someone injure you.

FWIW I've bowed out of my share of classes when someone's control was questionable, and have politely refused to work with someone who was overly enthusiastic or a thug.

In the "Bigger Picture" you have to build people's resistance to receive impact gradually and these "suit scenarios" should constitute no more than 5% of your overall training regime.  These fad courses that claim that you will only learn how to deal with a real attack with full time replication scenario development are mislead and dangerous.  5% max and be sure that you are training with people who understand how to build this type of training so that it is safe and beneficial for you to participate in.

One note on that Bullet Man suit- when was the last time you ever fought a guy with a head that big?  Just try to choke that guy out  ;D

Remember not to build scenarios that will reduce your response options- these are learning exercises not the real thing.  The key is developing broad and generic response maps so that in a real situation you  will be able to branch off with different options if the situation calls for it.

There is a whole cult of "large headed assailant training" that stems way back from the original Model Mugging days.  Ruthless was one of the originals connected at one time with Peyton Quinn and that suit kind of became a standard with those empowerment women's self defence scenario classes.

Smarter people who experimented with similar training developed better suits (and better programs) like Red Man, FIST and High Gear.  Others - because these suits are so expensive - put their own suits together from various protective sports equipment (not martial arts).

morning joe-understand there are better suits out now-what did impress me on the vidio was the way she got the students motivated- that means a lot- never saw her in person but if what she preachs she will do in a real situation i would like her next to me if a problem arose. At least she would not bend down and gringe and cry-(hopefully that is)  ;D

Thank you sir for your reply.  I have noticed that most of the good instructors of combative or street combat and most of the advancement of it comes from countries that have "No Gun" to the general public and live day to day the truth of the criminals having guns and knives.  Yes, I have seen your site and when I come to England, to give personal honor to Col. William Fairbairn, I would hope to see you

I teach a realistic form of Street Combat and I am PROUD to be among the Instructors here.  Anyone that teaches what is combative self defense must grow with the times and there is no better place that here at this forum.  NO, I am not brown nosing just stating fact.  Believe me I have done my homework and this is the place to be for advancement in this job that we do.

Never been attacked in class.

One newbie got irritated he couldn't catch me and took a bite out of his glove and spit it across the room.

 ::)

Ummmmmm, ok.  Waste of what he paid for the gloves but hey, it ain't my cash.

My teacher always advised us to fight the new guys very very conservatively until you realize if they are crazy or not.  It was good advice and I still follow it.

Thinking over the past many years in various classes the following are two times that i remember being attacked in class.

1-At the cherry point air station long time ago-i was put in ring with black belt- i had recently started taking karate-as we started the BB charged me and hit me in the face-
bam- broken nose for me-my instructor then got in the ring faought the other and slamed him on the wooden floor hurting him-i learned a lot that day...... :'(

2-afrter finishing a class at my school a fe years ago a MMA guy ran up behind me and wrapped his arms around me-i bent over grabbed both his legs pulled them  and slammed him onto the concrete next to the ring-i won that one- ;D :'(

things happen-you have to keep on trucking....WW (ELB) "speed of light)
