Firefly
« on: February 22, 2010, 07:40:28 PM »

I know there are Firefly fans here from the "V" thread, but I just scored the complete series box set for $18.88 at Sam's Club an topped it off with a copy of the movie Serenity, so this weekend looks like there might be a marathon coming.

Seems there were three episodes that never made it on air, but they are in the set.

If you've ever seen the TV show Castle, Nathan Fillion, gave a  nod to Firefly in the Halloween episode.

We're big fans of this show in my household, even though my wife is not all that interested in scifi.

I hurt my back pretty severely and was flat on the floor for a couple of days. One of my sensei gave me a this to watch and it took my mind off my pain.

From what I've read, the original pilot was rejected by Fox and the second episode was shown as the pilot, instead. Shows you what TV execs know - NOTHING! They never, ever gave this show the shot that it deserved. And, unfortunately, it looks like it was Joss Whedon's shining moment, never to be repeated (sorry, all you Buffy and Dollhouse fans!).

There is a mini-series of comic books that span the time between the TV show and the movie. They can be a bit difficult to find, but are worth reading.

I also can't recommend highly enough the books that are published about the show. Especially "Finding Serenity" by Jane Espenson. Various authors analyze the show from every angle, proving that this was one of the best shows on TV ever, regardless of genre. Again, they are a bit tricky to find but are available and worth every penny.

One of my students has a daughter in her late 30s that runs a "Browncoat" fan club. That's how far-reaching this show was. It will forever be a cult classic.

  grluan,
Its probably the set you already have if it's from Sam's Club which is where I bought it.  I am curious about the Blu Ray addition since they usually pack a lot of extras in thier box sets.

I saw the mini-series collected into a hardcover graphic novel at Borders last week.  I didn't check the price since I already have the softcover version.

YEah, I got the boxed set a few years ago for a birthday gift.  It's pretty sweet, has a lot of repeatability.  Some of the characters seem cliche', but the stories and shows seem to keep things interesting.  There is a HUGE Browncoat gathering at DragonCon every year.  Firefly/Serenity has it's own programming track, along with Star Wars and Star Trek, if that tells anyone anything about the popularity.

Ultimately, I think it was just too racy for the "conservative" Fox channel.  I don't know why, since these are the same people who brought us Melrose Place, 90210, yadda yadda.  I keep hoping Sci-Fi will pick this show up, but every year that hope gets slimmer and slimmer.

I don't think it had anything to do with being racy, it had to do with it being sci-fi.

One factor I read about was that "Firefly" episodes were cancelled when there was a sporting event and scheduling was switched without the viewers knowing.  I did not know about "Firefly" until it was already on DVD, but I experienced this problem when I started watching "Babylon 5."

Sci-fi is also more expensive to make, and cheap sitcoms about a bunch of idiots sitting around a living room are more popular.

Sci-Fi shows rarely last more than for more than one or two full seasons.  "Star Trek" appealed to the lowest common denominator types which was why it lasted.  "Babylon 5" lasted 4 seasons and was able to revive on cable for a 5th, and the sequel was canceled mid-season.  "Stargate" was on cable.
