Knife and Dogs
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:28:52 PM »

This is from one of our friends...

I had an unpleasant incident this weekend.
Our neighbour in our country house has 4 bullmastiffs. I have one bullmastiff.
I was in my garden which is unwalled with my two children 10 years and 18 years when the 4 bullmastiffs attacked my 4 year old bullmastiff.
Within a few seconds my dog was on her back, with the leader bullmastiff at her throat whilst the three other bullmastiffs were biting her body. Acting fast and instinctively, I drew my 5 " steel switchblade which was in my nearby vehicle and slashed with the sharpened side downwards onto the back and side of the attacking dog; he immediately withdrew, looked at me and walked away; The second bullmastiff came towards me threateningly; I stood my ground waiting until it was close enough to slash its face;
We looked at one another for a second and then it backed off, as did the other two bullmastiffs.
My bullmastiff ran inside limping and bleeding; but otherwise fine.
Unfortunately, the leader of the bullmastiff pack died from the injury.
Although my children were right there, they didn't see what I did but were traumatised (as I am);
I am absolutely astonised at how much damage was inflicted by a sharp switchblade.
I feel disturbed by the incident.
Did I do the right thing?
What would have happened to my bullmastiff had I not intervened?
Why was I so quickly recognised by the remainder of the pack as being an adversary?
Is my own dog aware that I saved her?
What potential danger was I exposed to?

Thank you for hearing my story.

Friend-four points

1- you were on your own property
2-you defended your self
3-you stood your ground and did not chase and do further harm
4-dont worry about it-just keep on with your life

You did the right and only thing you could have done at that moment. I have several pets, but more like family members. I would fight to the death for anyone of them. The fact that you didn't think and just acted shows how much you love your dog and shows what you would be willing to do for your human family members as well. Those are bad odds against some really big dogs. If my dog left the yard and attacked another mans family, I would expect know less then for the owner to protect his family. You did good. The only complaint I would have is that you had a knife only and not a gun too. And you would have been right to shoot all the dogs, who is to say that they could not have turned on you our your kids? A pack of dogs get allot more rowdy then just a lone dog.

ps: As for your dog knowing that you saved her, She knows

Some of you may remember that a few summers a dog went after my Son in a park, I went after the dog and ended up with half a face. It was also the one and only time I didn't have a knife on me. I always, always carry it now. Don't feel bad you did the right thing
