Take downs
« on: March 11, 2010, 05:56:44 PM »

This week I had time to watch some police shows on tv where the police vidio camers
took pictures. First one that interested me was a PO (Las Vagas i think) approached a  supect and while talking charge and hit im in the throat with a open c clamp of the hand and knocked him off his feet. The other was a PO who charges a suspect and clotheslines him-knocking him right off his feet. Both POs were alert and very fast on their feet.

I also saw a vidio made by mr Michael Depasquale Jr who shows blocking a round house and striking the throat with his hand. Think he was addressing POs or security.

All 3 were simple powerful and quick-better than a complex movement to block, twist,
turn and throw-

Were the videos from the early 1990's? You hit a guy in the throat today and off to court you go....

I watch COPS on Trutv......and alot of the shows are from 1993-1998.....when you could use force. At least without being sued.

You are right-Michael made these a few years ago-i understand about the legalities today-everyone is vidioing the incidents-
i like to review and learn tough-
i always tell students and when i give a seminar to always say- " i was in fear for my life" and get legal assistance-no matter what occured.
hope this finds you doing well- WW

   WW,

I'm glad you brought this up on this forum, as it was just posted on the Unarmed Combatives" portion.

Beautiful takedown, but not for the level of resistance that the suspect was demonstrating. PO or not, if someone is not listening to verbal commands, you can't strike them in the throat and take them to the pavement.

I don't think this video is from the nineties, as it was making the rounds on department e-mail about 3 or 4 years ago. But, I could be wrong.

But..... I would like to hear what some favorite takedowns people have (leo perspective)?

There was a long dicussion on this clip, years ago, somewhere here.

The "suspect" fell to the ground and split his open very good. This became a lawsuit and in the news.

When you hit folks, and they fall? Their heads hit the ground and can cause greater damage. In this case. A lengthy and expensive lawsuit.

after looking again i think it is from a few years ago-not the 90,s-agree also striking the head on the cement/ground can cause legal problems-WW

My comment about the clip being from the 90's was more directed towards the fact that departmental policies have changed drastically as to what "use of force" is allowed.

How many departments allow striking a suspect in the throat?
I would suspect zero unless he has a gun. You hit someone into the throat or use a clothesline in these days and time....you better be justified.....or a member of the PBA!

Here one- tank and all- I was told of a police officer in a near by county that told a prisoner to take out a bridge from his mouth that was gold- he didnt-officer  grabbed it and ripped it out- results= offider was repremanded-demoted and victim (prisoner)
offered 100K to keep it out  of court-dont know if he took offer or not yet-
I dont know what officer was thinking????

Thought i would pass this on-a friend  talked about giving a class of self defense to a group of POs-
He would have  them take the dominent hand that draws the pistol- put it behind thier back in the belt simulating arm was broken- and had a oponent attack.
Lots of interesting things there.
He did not elaberate on the defensive tactics
What do you guys recommend
I say- immendiate repeated kicks to lower body-
Charge the offender and try to knock him down
use other hand push one arm up go under-get behind and continue attack by
one arm choke/claw eyes/kick rear of knee

thoughts?? we have got to think out of the box...
