Isnt the term Krav Maga just a generic term for fighting or combat or something?

Krav Maga means "contact combat" or "close combat", so any of us doing either can be said to be doing krav maga (common noun) but not Krav Maga (proper name). Kind of like karate. There's a common use of the work but also a proper use.
As someone pointed out TKD used to be called Korean Karate which was actually pretty accurate back in the day considering it's lineage and resemblance to Japanese Karate styles. But to call modern TKD karate now wouldn't be accurate.

For what it's worth with Joe Average I say I do karate, as they have an idea of what that is and I've actually done karate. When talking with other martial artists I can get a little more detailed.

It is.  But it has come to signify a specific system of techniques and defenses, program of study, and methodology of teaching.

To say that you are teaching Krav Maga because you are teaching things that you learned from some Israeli guys is like claiming to teach Tae Kwon do because you are teaching things you learned from some Koreans.

I don't think WW is saying that at all. He has taken KM seminars and does have contact with a KM school, the sticking point is using the KM name with the lack of rank or certifications, and possibly a lack of adequate time training under a KM instructor in a KM curriculum.

Given the turmoil in the small world of KM my personel opinion, and that's all this is, would be to not use the KM name and avoid the hassles.

Noload and ghostrider-i really do appreciate the comments-i was not going to get into this any more but sense this is a open forum and all sides can express their opinion (which is one reason among many that I follow and add comments to the pposts.

anyhow-what I attempt to do in my own humble way is to continue to study various
styles and take tactics that fit into what i think will help my students to be safe out in the street-for example this week a champion in BJJ came from Brazil to the academy where I teach-we had a chance to discuss some tactics for the street and he showed me a excellent -fast - movement to get out of arms around the back of the head from the front-he showed it - and had me practise it on him (with resistance) and he corrected the points-i then have been reviewing it and today the class  will be shown it and practise it slowly and gradually and then move up in speed-
Now this move is from Muay Thai-and i will incorporate it into my training syllabus
Which leads us to the question-is this Krav Maga and can i use it-
IMHO -it is part of CQCombat which is what Krav Maga is-so it can be said -yes-its  part of the training .WW-part 2 in a moment-running out of room.

Part 2-to expound a little more-On You tube last week I saw a movement to block a punch and throw a opponent-its from Sambo-great movement where opponent starts punch-its blocked -other arm comes around back of head or straight accros and eith er using the head or punching arm opponent is thrown using a sort of hip motion-i am going to try that one also
And- lastly I saw a vidio of Silva using a elbow from  left to right on a upward angle take out his opponent-great  movement- another vido showed him using a sort of back fist while facing the opponent and knocking him out-point is this great fighter takes tactics from all styles and uses them .(now i am not MMA champion but i try the same -use what works and add them to my hybred generic KM-

Professor-first-after rereading your post a few times -i appreciate you wanting me to
not fall into any type trap i cant get out of.

What i did was register my business as Executive Self Defense with the city, county, and state-no mention of KM in it at all.

I am telling all my students that I am not registered with any orgnization in KM at all and that what they are taking is tactics from close combat that i have learned over the years which includes what teachers have shown me in KM  and other circles.

I do not wish to be thought of as a "walter Middy type" and will insure all i come into contact with- understand that . I never have said or ever  will say that I am something that I am not. 

One thing that I enjoy is passing on to younger people what was and is being passed to me by instructors who are not "walter middies by any means.

What I will do is take your post to heart and insure that I keep on the right path.
Please if i post something that you have knowledge of that you respond.

This brings us back to- WHY are you calling your system Avi's (your Hebrew name LOL) Krav Maga and using the T-shirts as advertising?  I'm not trying to be funny, but the Professor is right, you are talking in circles now.  Do the right thing- either get certified in KM or call and advertise what you do as Executive Self Defence.

Well I am new to this forum and I did not find an introduction spot on this forum but I just got done reading this topic and I have to agree with Joe and Hock on this. I can't understand how Whitewolf can think he is going to get away with selling Krav Maga shirts if he is not certified to teach KM. It does not make sense to me.
