got a question
« on: July 19, 2010, 08:46:38 AM »

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1295617/Gurkha-ordered-UK-beheading-dead-Taliban-fighter.html

Now, I've never been in the military but I think the British response is way over the top.

Can anyone explain the reasoning behind their actions?

Typical political BS.

I agree that their response is way over the top, but I could see the same thing happening from our own political administration. Give the guy orders that you need confirmation that the right target was eliminated, then reprimand him for carrying out said orders. Hopefully, somebody higher up the food chain will not only protect this young soldier but see to it that he's awarded a medal for carrying out his duties in a exemplary manner.

It seems rather contrary to me to be concerned with beheading an enemy that video tapes the beheading of others themselves. Maybe if Taliban beheading became a regular occurrence, it might become more difficult to recruit new members?

Reason # 7 why I'm glad I'm retired from military service:
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Isn't part of the Fear that the Gurkha generate in the enemy from the History of using the kukri to behead the enemy ?
The unit is told "Kill this target and Bring back absolute proof of the death".
Gurkha kill the target, come under heavy fire and cannot take the body back,so one of them does what needs to be done he takes absolute proof in the form of the head.

Give the man a promotion.
Instead he will probably get a trial and maybe even jail time.

I agree ,if a few more Taliban beheadings took place things may be different, but this is not a war anymore ,this is a negotiation on a battle field.
