The Colony
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:47:27 AM »

Hock's "End of the World" thread in another category reminded me of a show that I'm watching called The Colony. Basically, it's Survivor set in a post-apocalyptic world. Instead of games, the participants have to find water, food and shelter and protect themselves against intruders, etc.

It's pretty good, although it has all of the really irritating elements that Survivor has. For example, everybody's good looking and instantly strip down to very little clothing, which is ridiculous. And there's too much obviously manufactured drama.

Still, worth checking out. I think it's on Discovery.

It sure would be fun if Hock put something like this together and offered it to SFC members. I'd bet he could come up with something really good.

WHen I saw the promos I was intrigued in the same manner that Survivor first intrigued me.... "Hey, I can survive! Sounds like fun to be on TV...wait...what's with all the backbiting...and the naked guys?"

No thanks. I haven't seen the new show, but I worry that there's more drama than valuable information there. Of course, how else do they get people who are fed a steady diet of "The Hills", "Housewives of Sisterboff", and "The View" to watch TV nowadays?

If one must get that info from the tube, maybe look into "The Best Defense: Survival" on the Outdoor Channel.

Sarguy,

All fairly accurate criticisms. It would be hard to disagree with your gut assessment. The genre has certainly been beaten to death and will surely experience a decline soon (and an eventual return).

I will mention though, there are talking head expert comments interspersed, which makes the show much more tolerable and interesting.

I think this might be season 2. I did not see the first season.

Perhaps they could combine the Colony with the "end of the world" place Hock mentioned in the other thread...everyone pays 50K to be on the show, only to find they are stuck inside the BIO-DOME with Pauly Shore and some talking heads...
