Well, in Starship Troopers, EVERYONE had the RIGHT to serve, no matter how messed up. And the minimum was two years, I think, subject to the needs of the military. Can't quite remember.
I don't know exactly what is considered a "traditional" college student. I'm 30, three overseas tours and 11 years military service attending college. I see a lot of what you're talking about, kids with no real knowledge of the world. History class is going to be interesting, because I can already tell who the "blame the white man" people are going to be.
It's interesting how much of the beliefs, prejudices, and ignorance of the young is due to social conditioning. I've been reading "Brave New World", and the parallels between the story, which was written back in the Twenties or Thirties, and modern life are scary.
I spoke out today in English class, we were talking about beliefs that may have changed over time. I told the class that at one point in time I believed it was the government's responsibility to provide for the people, which I no longer believe. This semester is going to be interesting, that's for sure.
